Puerto Santa Maria, Spain

Another of our frequent ‘got lost’ episodes was when searching for our booked lodging in Puerto Santa Maria! Stopped to ask a man for directions and he swiftly hopped into the back seat, needing a ride to the same general area! Hours of searching resulted in an ‘oh no’ moment when the sign on our hotel read “Hostel”. Turned out to be both hotel and hostel so our booking was OK, but the hotel was probably a 1-star. The district was densely populated, dilapidated and noisy. The advertised “5-minute walk to the beach” was about 20 minutes. The area has dozens of individually named beaches to choose from. Learned that locals work in Cadiz but live elsewhere–like Santa Maria for example.

Booked a night at a hotel here due to its proximity to the highway, meaning that it would save us getting lost again in an urban maze! The lodging was very good, in a scenic setting, with breakfast included. The unusual part was that this small community did not have any stores…no corner store, no butcher (yuk) no fresh market…none. The exceptions were a tiny pharmacy with its hours of operation on the door yet it was closed during those hours, and a tiny pub with its few chairs occupied. The closest city is Salamanca, rather distant if you had a craving for potato chips or needed a pint of milk. Photos below were taken in the hotel’s bar…folks here are deeply committed to eating pigs as evidenced in grocery stores and most eateries but beer flowing from brass pigs’ quarters was a head-turner!
